U9’s end season in defeat

This is certainly the most difficult match report to write this season as the Under 9’s hopes of the first or second ended this morning at home to a good Vernon Colts side.

A warm end of season morning at Roundhill saw the sun out in all its glory with the sidelines packed with families and friends all down to support the boys in their final game of the season.

The first half in fairness was all Vernon Colts from the first whistle as we just couldn’t get going against a quick, difficult and organised Vernon Colts team.

Within 10 minutes The Under 9’s were 1-0 after a quick break and two down after 15 minutes after a well taken corner was met first by Vernon Colts to make it two – nil (0-2)

Half time couldn’t come soon enough as the midfield tried tireless to work the way back into the game and Nathan Millington was just isolated upfront even though he ran his socks off.

With two late injuries The under 9’s were glad to see out the half.

Half time 0-2.

The second half was a different story as the boys came out fighting and wore their hearts on their sleeves desperate to get back into the game the midfield trio seemed to cover every blade of grass and Nathan managed to find more space to attack. Wave after wave of attacks came and went for the boys but a corner mid way through the half from the yet again impressive Ryan Mills found Niall DREW in the box to bundle the ball over the line. 1-2

The boys continued to ask questions of Vernon as the game quickly became end to end with chances at both ends.

With 7 minutes left and still chasing the game subs were made in what was the last throw of the dice, but Vernon hit on the break and the lively number 8 ran clear to score, and end any hopes of a top two finish. 1-3.

Final Score 1-3.

A difficult game today with so much to play for, for such a small team, and relatively small club.
The second half performance in the heat was fantastic and their were some very brave performance’s individually when it was easier to give up but they kept trying and that’s the spirit I look for when I put so much into the team every week and the boys made it all worth while.

Over 18 weeks ago we looked at a very good league table with some great teams and said we would be happy in the first year just to staying up after the first four games, but what we have ended up doing is pushing the bigger clubs right to the wire especially when we have lost players and have never been able to replace them, where others have only strengthened.


I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has been involved with the team this season, your support for the boys has been fantastic each week, and I’m sure they appreciate it.

I now wish Hucknall Sports, Netherfield and Vernon Colts all the best for the last few games in what looks like a three horse race to the finish.
